flyer

The date is set. Sunday, September 13th will be the first (of hopefully many) Livingston County Crossfit Gatherings. We’re going to a do some kind of super secret uber special high speed ultra awesome team workout, comparable to the super bowl, without the halftime show, and then eat some BBQ’d meat and drink some beers. Or water for you health conscious folks.

Bring your wives, husbands, kids, dogs and neighbors. They’ll have fun watching and socializing and you’ll get to show off your mad crossfit skillz. Guaranteed to be a laid back good time.

We call it “fun friday”

August 29th, 2009 jpmummey No comments

Fun being a relative term. The workouts we do on fridays are different (also relatively speaking). The aim is something challenging but different. Usually team oriented, to bring out the best in everyone. If it doesn’t wind up being fun for the participants, it never fails to entertain me.

f001

This Friday athletes rolled the dice, literally, to construct their own workouts. The numbers on the dice determined how many exercises, which exercises, and how many reps of each. Not easy, but different. And fun, at least the dice part.

There are many types of hard

August 27th, 2009 jpmummey No comments

Today’s workout was a gasser. Not heavy, not complex. No movement challenging enough to warrant rest. Just you versus the clock. The result of which is a mental struggle to control your breathing and keep yourself moving. No easy task.

Whatcha bench?

August 26th, 2009 jpmummey No comments

Today was bench press day. For many of the women, it was their first time. Popular opinion says women don’t need to be strong. We don’t share that opinion here. Everyone benefits from being strength training. Young and old, men and women. Everyone moves weight.

The numbers put up by the ladies increased as the day went on. I don’t know if it just happened to be that the strongest came in last, or if seeing the weights of previous lifters lit a fire under later members. Props to Pru for posting the biggest lift of the day. 75lbs for 5 reps, but if you ask me she could have done 80.

Back in action

Nothing like a good vacation, drinking too much, eating too much, waking up early, staying up late, days packed with family friendly activities, getting lost, bad weather, forgotten necessities, and of course, drinking and eating too much… Yep, nothing like a good vacation to make you appreciate the simplicity of the daily grind.

Running away for the weekend

August 21st, 2009 jpmummey No comments

I’ll be out of town for the weekend. Friday through Monday, but don’t worry. You can still get your Crossfit fix. Bethany up at Crossfit Geneseo has graciously offered her gym and her top notch coaching to the members of the Dansville Fitness Club. While I’m gone, give her a call and set up an appointment. You’ll have fun and get your butt kicked. She has spots available Friday afternoon, Saturday Morning, and Monday.

Go play.

For most of my clients I can confidently say the hour they spend here will be the hardest part of their day. Both mentally and physically. The workouts they encounter are designed to introduce them to their limits. No matter how small or great they may be. Men work along side women, older folks work along side their youthful counterparts. Each engaged in a battle with their own capacity. The hardships they overcome shape the mind as much as they do the body. Enduring and surviving this daily war makes you stronger. You get comfortable facing struggle. The rest of your life becomes easier.

But the capacity you gain inside these walls only serves you outside them, because limits will always exist, you will always face them here, and facing them will always make you uncomfortable. Suffer now, smile later

Playing catch up

It’s been a busy couple of days. Spent a good portion of the weekend searching out parts, assembling and installing the new womens pullup bars. They turned out better than expected, big thanks to my pop for his labor and expertise. That brings us up to 11 pullup bars in a 600 square foot box. 12 if you count the flying bar, a present to me from me. Got a few miles of white board too, which will be a great place to keep track of all the impressive feats of human performance going on.
