Got 4 ladies off their feet this week, literally. Luanne, Pru and Jill all kicked up into handstands and Jen got pretty close. Being upsidedown and supporting your own bodyweight is scary and it’s awkward and it’s hard. 3 of my favorite things. But like anything else scary, awkward and hard you gain a tolerance for it rather quickly once you commit to actually trying. Nice job ladies.

Progressing up to a full handstand

Handstand in the bag, now she's going for a handstand pushup. Never a dull moment
I upped the official pushup standard for women (increased the range of motion) and they’ve all embraced the suck with smiles on their faces. Such a tough bunch of chicks! We’ll be doing a 2nd 6 week max push up challenge using the new standard. Women doing full pushups is one of the most motivating parts of my day. The last challenge resulted in some amazing progress (which will be posted after part 2 is complete) and I’m excited to see those numbers continue to increase.
And talking about increased numbers, holy shit did everyone pull some serious weight on their deadlifts today. Picking your bodyweight up off the floor is something anybody without pre-existing injuries can strive to achieve. One and a half times your bodyweight takes additional focus but is acheivable by most. Two times bodyweight is what separates the weekend warrior from the truly dedicated. A few of these athletes are on that road…
Sarah - 110
Kate - 115 (with a sore back)
Barb - 135
Jill - 135
Jen - 140
Denise - 185
Luanne - 200!
Pru - 200!
Bob - 285!

Big thanks to Bethany and all the stellar athletes up at Crossfit Geneseo. They were most excellent hosts and fierce competitors. There were many amazing performances and some close heats. After the last barbell fell Geneseo came out on top, winning the coveted Golden Crossfit Kettlebell and more importantly bragging rights from now until the next time we meet. There are tons of pictures floating around and once I get my hands on them I’ll put together a slide show. Right now, it’s bedtime. Congrats Geneseo, we’ll get you next time.

Not yet little man

The DFC is hitting the road tomorrow, heading up to Crossfit Geneseo for the first Livingston County Crossfit-a-Palooza. A friendly little competition between 2 like minded gyms. We have 16 different events that will be drawn at random. Each athlete will compete in 3 events and have an opportunity to score some points for their team. The events themselves won’t be revealed until tomorrow, so no one gets an upperhand. They’ll be plenty to do and watch so bring your friends and family. Workouts start at 2pm and they’ll be food and drinks after. Bring your own beer, a dish to pass and a little enthusiasm.

Hell of a weekend! My lady friend Samantha and I had a yard sale. Chase helped too. Barb and Luanne were the only ones who came Friday so they were the only ones who got to enjoy Fun Friday. It was a wicked confusing good time. They could add reps to their own score and subtract reps from the others or both by performing different tasks. It was an awkward race to 100 but Barb came out on top.

The weekend ended for me with a nice little run. 13 miles to be exact. I took on the Oak Tree Half Marathon up in Geneseo. I’m not a fan of running, never have been so, I did no running in preparation, only Crossfit. In fact I did 5×5 Deadlifts the day before. The farthest I’ve run in the last three months is 400 meters. I headed into the race confident and feeling strong. So strong in fact, that Bethany and I decided to do 10 Burpees at every mile. I mean come on… running is so boring. How did I do?
I managed to finish in 2 hours 20 minutes. Not a record, but the lack of specialized training and the addition of 130 burpees made it satisfying. Crossfit is supposed to prepare you for the unknown and unknowable. Even though I knew what I was getting into, I purposefully neglected running to prove a couple points. Number one, there aren’t enough people doing burpees in the world. Number 2, Crossfit won’t make you the best at any given athletic domain, but it damn sure will give you an impresive capacity in all of them. And number 3, get out of your comfort zone. Sign up for something. Ask your friends what their hobbies are and give them a try. You may not like it, but it’ll give some perspective and an experience. I managed to coherse 2 marathoners to do a burpee with me at a rest station. They weren’t pretty, but neither was my running! I tip my hat to the runners, they are masters of their domain. Their long, boring, joint ponding domain! Me? I’ll stick with my barbells and my 400 meters.

At the finish line, Burpee number 130. Nice form with those legs made of rubber!
