You may be familiar with the reality tv show of a similar name, but you probably don’t know about “Jill and Kate plus 8″. It’s a particularly brutal workout named after 2 of my favorite athletes and 8 of their most loved and hated movements. It’s long and hard and full of suck, but when it’s all over no one gets sued by TLC.
Sarah got married (congrats), I got a new “domesticated” vehicle, Geneseo had a super fun halloween party, and I turned 25. So in our world, that’s a marriage workout, a costume workout, and a birthday workout. All good times.
Eva offering a little moral support during a 300 meter effort
I don’t know many people who enjoy the rower (myself included). It’s a never ending supply of meters you just can’t seem to please. But the only reason I don’t enjoy rowing is because I’m not very good at it. The same used to be true of double unders, burpees, wallballs, front squats, and heavy deadlifts. I avoided them because I sucked at them and they hurt when I attempted to do more than 5. Unfortunately, you can’t get better at something by avoiding it (although everyone tries). When you take the time to man up and face the stuff you hate the most, you generally come out the other end with a “that wasn’t so bad” attitude. Over time I’ve gained a tolerance for burpees, wallballs, and even heavy deadlifts. Rowing is next. Right after overhead squats.
Face your fear head on, squash your inability, repeat.
Everyone who works out here has goals. They range from “just looking cute” to a legit handstand pushup (and she’s close). It’s important to work towards something. It provides you with motivation to keep training and it feels pretty good when you get to check a 300 pound deadlift off the list, or when you finally nail that first full pushup. It gives you confidence looking back and seeing how far you’ve come, the changes you’ve made. Conquering goals also opens doors to new possibilities. Athletes here are constantly looking forward, and for some, that handstand pushup is starting to look a little easier.
Luanne bailing on a max effort attempt. Can't make 'em all
Got a few new faces around the gym and some serious potential. I work with a variety of ages and ability levels, from young, strong and ready to rock, to not so young… deconditioned… and ready to take a nap. Both ends of the spectrum are exciting to work with. It’s motivating to get sedentary folks mobile again and see them unleash potential they didn’t know they had. It’s every bit as exciting providing direction to younger, stronger athletes and watching them surpass their already lofty goals. Here’s Don giving me a run for my money on day 2!
