They had some kind of scoring error that went un-noticed so I actually made it through sectionals. If only to get my ass kicked at regionals then so be it. I had a great weekend, got to see some old friends from Rochester and make some new ones from all over. The Crossfit community never ceases to produce to quality athletes with quality personalities. So many humble giants converged on Jersey and supported eachother before, during, and after their own efforts. I’m proud of what I do, but weekends like this fan the flames.

I don’t preach diet as much as I should, but you’ve also got to be your own advocate. Try new things, educate yourself, ask questions. There are no shortage of answers available.
Here is a great resource from those hippys out on the west coast. It centers around a farmers market but branches off into…
- Everyday healthy lifestyle choices
- Recipes
- Diet reviews
- Book reviews
- Warnings
- Links to many other valuable resources
- And much more
There really is a ton of content so bookmark the page, add it to your reader, or check back regularly. She even has a free “getting started guide” to help you adjust. Her basic idea is that food will always be a big part of your life so embrace it, learn about it, and enjoy it.
This weekend I’ll be competing in the first qualifying round for the 2010 Crossfit Games. An international competition designed to find and challenge the fittest men and women on the planet. Sounds cool when you say it like that. This weekend is an open competition for all of New York and New Jersey. It’s a 2 day event with multiple unknown workouts consisting of unknown movements at unknown weights. The ultimate test of individual capacity and training methods. How do you train for the unknown?
The winners this weekend will go on to face 5 other northeastern states in the next round of qualifiers (also unknown) and the winners there will go onto California to compete in the actual Crossfit Games. The best of the best of the best sort of deal.
When I first signed up I was pumped. Going to go down there and kick some Jersey ass. It fueled my efforts in the gym and tightened the reins on my diet. But as the days tick away I’m becoming more anxious. What if I suck? What if I get hurt? Why am I doing this? What if I come in dead last!? I feel like I’m in highschool again… about to ask out a cheerleader. I’m scared.
But it’s good to scare yourself. To put yourself into uncomfortable positions, test your boundaries… because you learn about yourself. You learn about your weaknesses and your strengths. I don’t plan on winning this weekend, but I plan on giving it everything I have. I plan on giving those Jersey monkeys a run for their money. I plan on having fun and being inspired. And maybe finding new ways to torture… I mean train all of you.
So the gym is closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Go out and use the skills you’ve gained here. Go for a hike or a walk. Dust off that bike and put the rubber to the road. Challenge your kids to a foot race and win. Go show your neighbor what a burpee is. Fitness is best enjoyed outside the gym, so do it.
Warm thoughts go out to Dede and her family (including all those at Crossfit Geneseo). She passed away Saturday after putting in a hell of a fight. You can find the details of her calling hours and show your support here. Rest in peace Dede.
Lot’s of strong stuff happening. Steph picked up 255, Mike almost died doing Fran, Don squatted 250, Chuck got on the record board in his warm up, Luanne is scratching at unassisted pullups, and Chase can do burpees now! Video coming soon…
